Cross Country: Simple and Enduring
For those unaware of this incredible activity, cross country running is a competitive sport in which runners race over varrying terrain (concrete, grass, mud, etc.) on an established course. Course distances are usually consistent, ranging anywhere from 1 kilometer (.62 miles) to 135 miles (an ultramarathon). Races typically begin in a group start, with all the runners on the same line. The finish consists of a finish line leading into a narrow chute, where times and places can be processed. The greatest cross country athletes possess endurance, drive, and often extremely powerful cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Although technically a team sport, cross country requires an individual drive virtually unrivaled in the sporting world.
